Art Ed Dialogues aims to connect students with teachers in training. This interaction began in early 2016 with the help of Mariyln Casey, who hosted our first session at City College of New York along with her Art and Theater Education graduate students. These dialogues are meant to break away from the formalities of “teacher” and “student” in an effort to speak on our common humanity. Topics that often come up relate to barriers and hurdles young people face when getting involved with the arts and the lasting impact that a strong arts education can have on an individual as they grow older. Another thread that has emerged is the ways that working/studying within the arts can be both limiting and freeing, and ways that we all must navigate the day-to-day while balancing our creative drives. And finally, in our most recent iteration, hosted by the Angela LaPorte at the University of Arkansas, students highlighted how to navigate power struggles in the classroom as well as what authenticity in education can look like.
