Erasing Separation

Erasing Separation is an exhibit made by local students from Hamilton Grange Middle School and Manhattan Hunter Science High School who have been collaborating and creating work based around the idea of how their homes are represented and perceived by those who live in their communities and those who live outside of them. The work we’ve made draws references and inspirations from our neighborhoods in uptown Manhattan and the Bronx as well as the island of Hispañola. We’ve been thinking about the arbitrary lines that separate neighborhood from neighborhood and country from country. Our exhibit poses questions on how these cultural and historical divisions can keep us apart from one another.

Opening Event: March 5, 5pm-7pm

Du Bois’s conviction that propaganda through the arts can create social change, Persuasive Visions presents the work of two local artists, Gina Goico and Nick Kozak, who respond to today’s constant deluge of (mis)information.

NYU Alumni Art Show

  • 34 Stuyvesant Street New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This exhibition of alumni from New York University’s Fine Art Department brings together a group of artists whose work articulates the intersection between the coloniality of power, geo-political rupture and displacement, personal and collective ritual and memory, and the relationship of the natural world to bio-technology. Sculptures, ceramics, sound, painting, video and drawings evoke interior sensory and emotional states, and reconfigure fragmented memories as traces. A series of prints examines the implications of outsourcing and globalization, and the imperialistic myths embedded in familiar products. A group of video works uses storytelling to open up new readings of key moments in the political histories of countries including Bolivia, South Korea, and the Indonesian island of Rhun.  The self-contained ecosystem of a Biosphere becomes the site for exploring the potential for new models fusing technology and biological systems to influence the future of the planet. The global reach of the works in this exhibition grounds our subjective experience within a deeply complex cultural and geo-political history.

The Columbian Exchange

At this moment, national and local dialogues are being had about how history is memorialized through monuments, holidays, and public spaces. As New Yorkers (re)consider what constitutes a symbol of hate, The Columbian Exchange will unpack the ways artists, educators, and historians are confronting historical bias through their work.

The Columbian Exchange is named for the period of time following the European conquests of the Americas; and the people, plants, animals, diseases, and ideas that were taken across both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. This ‘exchange’ was a complex period of both diffusion and exploitation—the results of which reverberate to this very day. Join us at the Queens Museum on October 8th, for conversations and activities that will help us all recognize the symbols of colonialism and how to deconstruct them.
